The health and condition of Port Phillip Bay’s habitats and marine life are evaluated using the Marine Biodiversity Index (MBI), and the Estuarine Index. The Seafloor Integrity project is developing indicators that will be integrated in future reporting. Indices enable simplified reporting on complex information and are used worldwide for reporting on environmental condition and management actions. The MBI provides high-level evidence to highlight and direct future efforts towards priority areas of the marine ecosystem that are declining in health.

The 2022-2023 or last reported status of marine ecosystem components in Port Phillip Bay is summarised below. Some species have updated 2022-2023 data which has been used in reporting and made evident on each page. The remaining species data displayed is to 2021-2022 and will be updated with current information in mid-2024 in the 2022-2023 Annual Report and 2023 Delivery Plan. Further detail for each marine ecosystem component and comprising assessment biota can be found in the methodology section.
