Habitats and Marine life goal has 2 strategies; habitats and marine life and marine biosecurity. These are where we see hectares of area restored, conserved or protected reported and the monitoring of marine pests both, those that are new to Victoria or the status of existing pests. With the introduction of both the Marine Biodiversity and Marine Biosecurity indices since 2017, these provide high-level evidence to highlight and direct future efforts towards priority areas of the marine ecosystem. Five KPIs are meeting their performance targets, one KPI does not have data to
be assessed yet and the last one has set a baseline.
This goal has been vital in understanding the living organisms and environment that is crucial to achieving a valued and healthy Bay and has continued to grow and adapt since the formalisation of the EMP. The Habitats and Marine Life was the highest rated strategy from survey respondents for the key priority that requires more attention. While community can see that progress has been better in understanding indicators species in the Bay, marine pests and their abundance and better protection of Bay habitats, there does need to be longer term monitoring and researching approaches applied, especially when considering the interconnectedness of life in and around the Bay.
The chart below shows the KPI target performance. The full list of the KPIs and their target performance are listed in the MERI report.
