The Eutrophication Index provides a robust and integrated index that aims to capture the effects of nutrient enrichment by analysing available long-term trend data to identify areas of concern and highlight necessary improvements or abatement measures. The index utilises a hierarchical nested structure to categorising and weighting indicators based on 3 criteria: 1) nutrient levels, 2) direct effects and 3) indirect effects. The approach produces a robust assessment for identifying cause and effect pathways.
